Kant and the Problems of Sex

    Get PDF
Kant argues that sex is only permissible under the condition of marriage. In this paper, I argue that Kant’s argument for the impermissibility of non-marital sex commits him to the impermissibility of all sex. I then show how he might alter his account of sexuality in such a way that it would both allow him to avoid the conclusion that all sex is impermissible and be more consistent with his broader ethical and anthropological thought

Landing at Home: Insights on Immigration and Metropolitan Housing Markets from the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada

This paper examines the housing conditions, needs and trajectories of recent new- comers to Canada, by focusing on the first few months of their adjustment process. Until now, most research in this field has been unable to provide a comprehensive description of this early stage of settlement. Employing individual survey data from the first wave of Statistics Canada’s Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada (LSIC), we draw a portrait of immigrant and refugee residential out- comes as observed six months after arrival. In particular, we highlight five novel insights, centered around the rapidity with which newcomers in general enter the housing market, but also around the appreciable variability of outcomes in tenure status, class of entry, metropolitan area of settlement, and assessment by newcom- ers of their situation in the housing market. We conclude with a discussion of the significance of these variegated findings for the settlement experience of recently arrived immigrants and refugees and, more broadly, for social policy in the areas of housing and newcomer integration

On the Generalised Colouring Numbers of Graphs that Exclude a Fixed Minor

The generalised colouring numbers colr(G)\mathrm{col}_r(G) and wcolr(G)\mathrm{wcol}_r(G) were introduced by Kierstead and Yang as a generalisation of the usual colouring number, and have since then found important theoretical and algorithmic applications. In this paper, we dramatically improve upon the known upper bounds for generalised colouring numbers for graphs excluding a fixed minor, from the exponential bounds of Grohe et al. to a linear bound for the rr-colouring number colr\mathrm{col}_r and a polynomial bound for the weak rr-colouring number wcolr\mathrm{wcol}_r. In particular, we show that if GG excludes KtK_t as a minor, for some fixed t≥4t\ge4, then colr(G)≤(t−12) (2r+1)\mathrm{col}_r(G)\le\binom{t-1}{2}\,(2r+1) and wcolr(G)≤(r+t−2t−2)⋅(t−3)(2r+1)∈O(r t−1)\mathrm{wcol}_r(G)\le\binom{r+t-2}{t-2}\cdot(t-3)(2r+1)\in\mathcal{O}(r^{\,t-1}). In the case of graphs GG of bounded genus gg, we improve the bounds to colr(G)≤(2g+3)(2r+1)\mathrm{col}_r(G)\le(2g+3)(2r+1) (and even colr(G)≤5r+1\mathrm{col}_r(G)\le5r+1 if g=0g=0, i.e. if GG is planar) and wcolr(G)≤(2g+(r+22)) (2r+1)\mathrm{wcol}_r(G)\le\Bigl(2g+\binom{r+2}{2}\Bigr)\,(2r+1).Comment: 21 pages, to appear in European Journal of Combinatoric

Free-living ciliates from a perturbed marsh in Central Mexico: some notes about taxonomy and ecology

En éste artículo se da a conocer el primer inventario de Ciliados en el lago Atarasquillo una de las Cíenegas del Lerma. México.Ciliates are a morphologically diverse group of eukaryotes inhabiting aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. We studied the taxonomy and ecology of free-living ciliates from a freshwater marsh in Central Mexico during the period from 2012 to 2013 during both dry and rainy seasons. We found 30 ciliate species recorded for the first time from Atarasquillo marsh in Mexico, most of which are common species in freshwater ecosystems. The species richness was higher during the dry season than rainy season. Five trophic groups were observed: bacterivorous, bacteria-algae-heterotrophic flagellate consumers (BAF-consumers), omnivorous, predators, and myxotrophic species. The trophic group composition changed according of the season and the environmental conditions, e.g. vegetation and water level. Generally bacterivorous ciliates were more frequent during the rainy season, meanwhile the omnivorous were during the dry season, thus the feeding strategies in ciliates are different between both seasons. Due to the fact that Atarasquillo marsh is in deterioration process, ciliate records could be used to assess water quality.Secretaría de Investigación, UAEM. Proyecto de Investigación: 3429/2013 CHT

Pancreatoblastoma in a paediatric patient: anatomo-pathological aspects of a case with multiple hepatic metastases

    Get PDF
Pancreatoblastoma is a rare paediatric malignant neoplasm. The treatment of choice is complete surgical resection. However, it is often unresectable due to its large size, local infiltration or distant metastasis. Since the condition is rare, there is currently no standard treatment regimen. We outline the case of a 4-year-old child who presented with abdominal pain and distention, together with an enlarged liver and elevated serum α-fetoprotein levels. Imaging studies showed the presence of an abnormal pancreatic tumour and multiple nodular lesions in the liver, the biopsies from which led to a diagnosis of pancreatoblastoma. In this case, the patient received cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, combining cisplatin and doxorubicin. The patient subsequently underwent scheduled surgery in which the primary pancreatic lesion was resected, obtaining a circumscribed and nodular specimen measuring 7 × 6 cm and weighing 150 g. Given the extent of the metastasis, the child is currently awaiting a liver transplant.Fil: Cao, Gabriel Fernando. Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.
